Brecon Museum and Library Redevelopment
Powys County Council have been awarded £2.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the redevelopment of the museum and art gallery, which will include a new library. The latest plans for the redevelopment, now called the Brecon Cultural Hub, will include a community space, café and shop. The plans include the restoration of the original Assize Court and underground cells as a visitor attraction.
This site, "Y Gaer", is now open, but anyone contemplating a visit should note that the site is closed on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday and the cafe is not yet open (January 2020)
Brecon Remembers World War I - The Men who Died
In the WWI Special Edition of the Old Boys’ newsletter in 2014 we included brief summaries of the Old Boys who had died in World War I. These were provided by Steve Morris who was a member of a team engaged in the task of writing a book with the above title. The task was undertaken by the Family History Group of the Brecon U3A. The book, which includes details of all the Brecon men who fell in World War I, was launched on 6th December 2016 in Brecon, and can be read on-line or downloaded from the website www.breconremembers.co.uk. This would be an excellent resource for anyone researching their ancestors who died in WWI.
The New High School
The new school opened last December and members of the Old Boys' Committee were shown round on 22nd January 2020 when they were in Brecon for a committee meeting. The pupils were enjoying the new environment after the dilapidated condition of the old building!
Mr Richard Jenkins, who was brought in as interim Headteacher of the High School in 2019, was appointed to the permanent post with effect from 1st March 2020. Prior to his move to Brecon he was senior deputy at Porth Community School. An extended article about Mr Jenkins will appear in the 2022 Old Boys’ newsletter.
At the last committee meeting (on Zoom) of the Old Boys' Association it was decided that it was unlikely that we would be able to hold our 2021 Reunion at the usual time a week after Easter. We have made a provisional booking for the reunion at the Castle Hotel for Saturday September 18th 2021.
The AGM will be held at the usual date, Saturday April 10th 2021 at 2:15pm. If anyone would like to join us please let Tom know. Invitations will be sent out before the meeting. You will need to have Zoom, which is free to download, on your computer/tablet.
